Big Garden Bird Watch 2023

It’s that time of year again!

Each year, RSPB hosts the ‘Big Garden Bird Watch’ which is a citizen science event where they ask people to spend 1 hour counting the number of different birds they spot. This doesn’t need to be in a garden – you can do it in a park, a woodland, nature reserve – anywhere you like!

When is it?

It will be this coming weekend – 27th – 29th January 2023. The weather looks favourable for this weekend too!

Why is it important?

In the past 50 years we have lost 38 million birds from the UK (RSPB) which is incredibly concerning. Campaigns like BGBW allow the RSPB to monitor how UK bird numbers are performing, especially as we are currently in a climate emergency.

How can you take part?

It is super easy (and free too)!

Sign up via RSPB’s website: rspb.org.uk/birdwatch & you will get a bird ID sheet which you can download.

- Watch the birds for 1 hour

- Count how many land in the area you are surveying

- Go online & report your findings.

Happy Spotting!
