The RSPB BIG BIRD WATCH COMES TO THE COMMUNITY GARDEN!

On the 23rd of January at 1pm, St Andrews Environmental Network will be taking part in the RSPB Big Bird Watch in our Community Garden – the largest outdoor wildlife survey in the world! Every year, thousands of wildlife enthusiasts gather to paint a picture of how the country’s wildlife is faring, which is even more essential during this time of rapid climate change.

In the short time we’ve had our community garden we’ve worked hard to cultivate a robust ecosystem and to attract as many of our feathered friends as we can, so it would mean a lot to us if you could come along and help us see how we’re getting on.

The wildlife survey provides invaluable data on how wildlife is faring throughout the year and all across the country. We are keen to play our part in this important work, so if you can, please come along and lend us a hand. Every bird counted matters! Last year, over 590,000 bird watchers came together, counting to 9.1 million birds. However, sightings of even the most populous birds are down 60% since the bird watch began in 1979. Birds are facing so many more challenges now, so the bird watch is crucial now more than ever.

The bird watch takes place from the 23rd to the 25th of January this year, and to participate the community is asked to spend one hour counting birds in their garden, back yard or local park. We will be participating on the 23rd of January 2026 at 1pm, in the Kell Community Garden. There will be complimentary coffee and tea on site, so please be sure to wrap up warm and come along and lend your time (and your eyes) to this important cause.
