Community Gardening at The Eco Hub

Yesterday was another of our Eco Hub Community Garden sessions. Despite the chill in the air there was much to do and see!

We weeded some of the raised beds & harvested some of the last of the produce in the garden too!

When tidying the raised beds, we came across some funky-looking stuff on the soil – Dog Vomit Slime Mould – which, despite the slightly gross name, isn’t too harmful to plants and produce.

It has appeared recently following the wetter conditions we have been having & some of the compost being shaded by the produce growing.

We’ve found some creatures still milling around too – a bee was chilling out on the courgette flowers and we found a rather handsome centipede in the soil too!

We have, finally, managed to salvage 1 singular strawberry which escaped the wrath of the birds (unlike it’s chums). We picked some of the last courgettes of the season & some smaller broccoli florets too. The leaves of which were chopped up and added to our wormery.

We also took some of the liquid fertiliser that the worms had produced and we used this on some of the raised beds too.

Although the garden is somewhat winding down for the season, we are very much in the planning stages for next year – how we will lay out the raised beds, planning events for the new season and we will soon be cutting back the wildflower meadow and collecting some seeds for next year too.

Back in the spring, we had had the StAndEN team plant some sunflower seeds in the garden – to add some colour and jolly-ness. These have now just started to flower – we hope that they will flower enough for us to collect some of their seeds both as bird feed over the winter but also to plant again next year in the garden!

If you would like to get involved with our Community Garden, we are still running sessions fortnightly – the next few sessions are noted below. If you have some free time, do pop along – we would love to see you there!
